The concluding movement of a short comic cantata about an eccentric music history professor and a mysteriously rubric-less term paper. In this finale, Katie and the TA confront Professor Geiger in his office, hoping to finally discover what the assignment is actually about. This work completes the three-movement set: I. "There's this word I'm thinking of..." (aria) II. "Peter e-excuse me?" (duet) III. "How is it marked?!" (trio) Special thanks to: Katie Colbourne as Katie Ian Balana as Prof. Geiger Leo Sigut as Peter

Full Description & Score
Introduction to Music History (2026) is a three-part cantata that I composed, scored for soprano, two tenors, and piano. Loosely based on a first-year music history class, it follows Katie, an irritable student trying to understand a final paper rubric. She consults Peter, her TA, and ultimately confronts Prof. Geiger, an eccentric and elusive instructor. The first part features Prof. Geiger’s lecture and da capo aria, with the piano reflecting his wandering, referential thought process. The second part is a duet between Katie and Peter in sonata-allegro form, contrasting Katie’s agitation with Peter’s initial detachment. The final part is a five-part rondo, recalling material from earlier sections and uniting the characters’ musical and narrative arcs.
